How the vertical farm cost calculator works
- Describe the space. A few racks in a spare room, a whole garage, a 40 ft shipping container, a small industrial unit, or a warehouse. Each preset loads realistic floor area, stacking, rent and build cost — then change any of them.
- Pick a crop and a buyer. Five crops that actually pay at small scale: oyster mushrooms, lion’s mane, microgreens, edible flowers and basil. The buyer matters more than the country you are in — a wholesaler pays roughly a quarter of what a subscription box pays for identical produce, and pays 35 days later.
- Enter your real bills. Your business electricity rate, your rent, the hours you can genuinely work, and what the build costs per square foot.

What it costs to build and run a vertical farm
The two numbers that decide everything are build cost and electricity, and both have honest published ranges the calculator starts from:
- Build cost: $150–250 per square foot for the fit-out — racking, lights, HVAC, irrigation, controls. A 40 ft container conversion runs higher per square foot than a room, because you are paying for the box.
- Energy: 10–18 kWh per kg of leafy greens at real, measured farms — against 2.3–7.8 kWh/kg in best-practice models. That gap is the single most useful thing on this page: it tells you whether your assumptions sit near what people actually achieve or near what a brochure promises.
- Labour is the cost everyone forgets. The calculator prices your own hours, checks whether the crop’s harvest work physically fits in the week you said you had, and tells you when it doesn’t.
- Working capital. Restaurants and wholesalers pay 30–35 days after delivery. The tool shows the cash you need to survive before anyone pays you — the number that kills more small farms than yield ever does.
Why most vertical farming calculators give you the wrong answer
They are arithmetic, not models. You type in a yield and an energy cost and they multiply. Nothing derives the electricity from the light recipe, nothing checks your inputs against what anyone has ever achieved, and nothing is willing to tell you no — because the company hosting the calculator earns money when you say yes.
This one derives lighting energy from the daily light integral, your LED efficacy and your growing area, then adds the HVAC load that removes the heat those lamps just made. Mushrooms are modelled differently on purpose: they fruit in the dark, so their bill is climate control, not lamps. The commodity salad crops most beginners try first are deliberately missing — at spare-room scale they lose money every time, and a calculator that hides that is not doing you a favour.

Is vertical farming profitable?
At small scale, sometimes — and it depends far more on what you grow and who buys it than on the technology. Gourmet mushrooms, microgreens and edible flowers sold direct or to restaurants can clear a real margin in a spare room. Commodity leafy greens at that scale almost never do. At industrial scale the record is much worse: AppHarvest, AeroFarms and Kalera all went bankrupt after roughly $4bn went into the sector. A few racks in a spare room can start in the low thousands; a 40 ft container farm typically runs $40,000–200,000 all-in; a warehouse is a seven-figure project. What is the cost of vertical farming per acre?
Per acre is the wrong unit for indoor growing and it is worth knowing why: a vertical farm stacks, so one acre of floor can hold four to eight acres of growing surface, each with its own lighting bill. Cost per square foot of floor, and then cost per kilo of product, are the numbers that actually compare between farms. This calculator works in cost per pound (or per kg) for exactly that reason.
Why isn’t lettuce on the crop list?
Because at the scale this tool is built for it loses money, reliably. Commodity leafy greens are what most beginners try first and what the maths kills every time — a supermarket sells lettuce for less than it costs you to light it. The five crops offered are the ones with published margins that survive a small footprint.
Is the calculator free?

Where do the numbers come from?
Energy benchmarks come from a measured study of operating farms and a 2026 Frontiers modelling paper; crop prices from published grower margins; market stall fees and delivery costs from real vendor pages. Every source is linked in the footer of the tool itself, and the figures that are estimates rather than published are labelled as estimates.
